This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Cecil Doughty.

John Lackland, the Tiny Tyrant. Lackland was a cruel nickname given the future King John as his father King Henry II had parcelled out his lands to John's three older brothers including the future King Richard (The Lionheart).

King John fought with his Barons after they forced him into signing the Magna Carta. The painting shows the result of John stupidly telling his men to cross The Wash. As a result the men, horses and their luggage including the crown jewels were shipwrecked and lost to the quicksand.

From Look and Learn no. 526 (12 February 1972).
