Artist: Eric Parker (biography)
Medium: Watercolour on Board
Size: 16" x 20" (400mm x 510mm)
Date: 1968

This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Eric Parker.

In 1667 a Dutch fleet sailed into the Medway to damage British ships at anchor there. The idea was to negotiate a strong peace agreement with the treaty of Breda. (Top).

Bottom left shows a British sailor of the mid-17th Century. The larger portrait is that of diarist Samuel Pepys who was made Clerk of the Acts on the Navy Board. He got this position as a relative of Admiral Montagu.

Pepys did much to regularise the organisation of the Navy and many of the specifics of ships of the period are due to his work.

The ship at the bottom shows Wreath Ports, carved and gilded work around the gun ports of the ship, a trend from the same period.

From Look and Learn no. 327 (20 April 1968).
